Laser Works was a competition arranged by KEPS in Copenhagen. KEPS is a part of the work collective Republikken situated at Vesterbro, and the organisation has recently bought a laser cut machine. To challenge the possibilities of Laser cutting, KEPS arranged the competition Laser Works 2010. The competition was extremely inspiring and gave birth to a whole new way of thinking laser cut wood.
I participated in the contest with Steinunn Aradóttir as my companion. Together we created a so-called 'Mechanical Painting'. The artwork is a juxtaposition of the soft, abstract lines of a painting and the technical precision of mechanics. Holes in the painting reveals mechanics behind the work itself, and
the work thereby contains more than the viewer expects at first.
The viewer can interact with the artwork (and art) by turning the red cog. The rets of the cogs thereby starts rotating at different speads, due to their respective sizes.
The work is an attempt to a playful approach to the laser cutter, an interaction between mechanics, abstractions, colors, thicknesses, layers and depth.
